Building Description: Commissioned by oil magnate Hascal L. Taylor in the 1890s, the Guaranty Building was envisioned as Buffalo’s premier officed space, symbolizing the city’s industrial ambition. Designed by Adler & Sullivan – their final collaboration – it introduced groundbreaking steel-frame construction and Sullivan’s signature ornamental terra cotta facade. The U-Shaped design optimized daylight, while brick sides anticipated future neighboring structures.  Financially, it has mirrored Buffalo’s economic ebb and flow built for $500,000, renamed by Prudential in 1898 after a foreclosure, and nearly lost again in the 1990s.  Today, after a $15 million renovation by Hodgson Russ, LLP, it stands restored as their headquarters and as a beacon of Buffalo’s architectural legacy and resilience.
