Building Description: Established in April 2022, The C. Stuart and Jane H. Hunt Art Gallery is a dynamic cultural institution located in downtown Buffalo, New York. With a mission to support and enhance the representation of artists in Western New York, the gallery has quickly become a vibrant hub for the local arts community.
The Hunt Art Gallery is dedicated to showcasing both established and emerging artists, providing them with valuable opportunities to exhibit and sell their work. In addition to traditional gallery exhibitions, the space offers innovative programs such as the “Hunt Residencies” 501c3 program. This initiative provides emerging artists with mentorship, exhibition opportunities, and free studio space for a period of 5-6 months, fostering their career development and representation in the Buffalo arts scene.
Founded by Peter Hunt of Hunt Real Estate, the gallery has formed a unique partnership with the Buffalo Society of Artists (BSA), further strengthening its ties to the local arts community. Named in honor of Hunt’s parents, the gallery symbolizes the resurgence and revitalization of downtown Buffalo.
Despite challenges posed by the pandemic, the Hunt Art Gallery remains committed to its mission of supporting and representing Western New York artists. Through innovative programming and engaging exhibitions, the gallery continues to enrich the cultural landscape of the region, providing a platform for artistic expression and creativity.
Additional Information about the building: The Brisbane Building is a cornerstone of downtown Buffalo. It was designed by Milton Beebe and erected in 1895. It has weathered the Pan Am Exhibition, two World Wars, a banking crash and remains well occupied and positioned for the future following an extensive restoration program.
The building at one time had a very significant retail presence including Woolworth’s and Kleinhans Department Store. These days, the building is home to a variety of professional tenants as well as a cutting-edge art gallery and the Beebe’s at the Gallery Event Center.
