Visitor Experience: M &T Bank is the only bank founded in Buffalo that remains here today, serving as the caretaker of this remarkable building. While the exterior is striking, the interior is equally impressive. The murals, added in 1926 by the Frances, Davidson and Savage Painting Company, are particularly noteworthy. They surround the dome on four sides, each representing Commerce, the Arts, Power, and Industry, and together reflect the energy and growth of Buffalo at the turn of the century. At the center of the dome is a quote from Confucius: “Virtue is the root, and wealth is the flower.”
Building Description: The building is a neoclassical, Beaux-Arts style bank designed by well known architects E.B. Green and William Wicks in 1899. The building’s signature feature is the gold-leafed dome, which measures 23 ft. tall and 56 ft. in diameter. It is covered with 13,500 terra-cotta tiles.
